Project Planet Poster Awards

Icarus Complex Magazine

This was made for submission to Icarus Complex Magazine, a magazine examining the challenges of justice, for their annual Planet Poster Contest, for the prompt “Greed is a curable disease.”

While making this, I thought a lot about the space that industry takes up—power plants and cooling towers and exclusion zones and long-term waste storage, most of which leaves the space unusable for decades. And it’s not only in the square footage, but in the near-constant clouds of smoke that come from plants and factories, clogging up the sky. So much of the Earth can feel intangible and hard to fathom until it gets suffocated by growing clusters of industrial hot spots like these. For the actual design, I really love the look of contour lines on an elevation map—they occupy a lot of space visually, but in a minimalist way; a quiet way to show the scale of land and water, and what’s being lost to industrial sprawl.
